Mia Bureau's bio - From Ephemeral Sculpture to Contemporary Art
Born in 1978, the Montreal artist grew up in an environment where architecture and art were omnipresent, influenced by her architect father and design-enthusiast mother. Educated in an alternative school, she acquired a variety of artistic skills at a young age, such as perspective drawing, watercolor painting, and modeling.
Mia’s adolescence, marked by personal challenges, saw art become her refuge. She began selling her works to those around her and actively participated in adult art workshops, demonstrating early artistic maturity. At 19, she earned a diploma as an interior design technician. Although she did not complete her university studies in environmental design and visual arts, these experiences enriched her artistic vision.
In her twenties, Mia traveled alone through Europe and Asia, developing a rich personal culture and confronting the realities of womanhood, both for herself and the women she met. In 2005, she became a mother, an experience both illuminating and transformative.
Driven by an autodidactic spirit, she ventured into the production of ephemeral sculptures on fruits in 2008, giving birth to "Sculpture Culinaire Mia Bureau." This corporate event art enterprise became her main source of income, showcasing her ability to successfully merge art and entrepreneurship. 2020 marked her return to contemporary visual art, sharing her time between her creations and her work in event art.
Mia Bureau is an artist whose varied journey reflects an incessant quest for meaning and beauty. Her works, nourished by her personal experiences and travels, stand out for their sincerity and innovation.
Artist’s Approach
I consider myself primarily a sculptor: all my creations are conceived in three dimensions. My process begins with mental images and emotions rather than words. My works are a materialization of these ideas and feelings. My need to create was born in childhood when I started making objects I desired but could not buy. This impulse to produce high-quality works I wish to live with daily is the essential drive of my practice.
My work explores the duality between the fluid and colorful organic and the hard and cold constructed. As human beings, we have the ability to build utilitarian and mathematical structures with our intellect. At the same time, we are driven by our desires and emotions, which can be contradictory or subtle and complex, certainly difficult to define. My approach aims to poetically reflect this reality in the material.
I seek to enrich our living spaces with works that provoke thought while bringing joy and comfort. The creation of beauty is essential in my process, and I reject strictly conceptual art. The condition of women is also a central theme. I question the image of femininity and the social limitations imposed on women. Through both my production and numerous public performances and live installations, I assert my presence and vision as a female artist.
